The Department of Computer Applications at SDM College of Business Management, in association with Karavali Wikimedians User Group, Mangaluru, and the Centre for Internet and Society, Access to Knowledge (CIS/A2K), Bengaluru, organized a one-day National Level Wikipedia Workshop titled “SDM-Neophyte: Unlocking Knowledge, Igniting Curiosity.” On 16 March 2024.
The event aimed to introduce participants to the world of Wikipedia and guide them on how to contribute to this global knowledge platform.
The workshop was inaugurated by Ms. Chris, Communications Associate at CIS-A2K, Bengaluru, with Ms. Nitesh Gill, Programme Officer at CIS-A2K, Bengaluru, serving as the chief guest. The workshop aimed to equip new editors with skills to create new articles, translate articles, improve existing content, and learn the usage of various templates.
In her inaugural address, Ms. Gill emphasized the importance of contributing to Wikimedia, urging participants to write articles not only for personal knowledge but also to benefit others, ignite curiosity, and inspire future generations. She also highlighted the mission of CIS-A2K, which focuses on supporting Indian Wikimedia communities by expanding content under free licenses, executing community-driven projects, and nurturing a supportive legal and technological environment.
Prof. Aruna P Kamath, Principal of SDM College, in her presidential speech, underscored the importance of the workshop in fostering innovation and knowledge sharing, aligning with SDM College’s commitment to nurturing scholars and promoting excellence.
The workshop’s technical sessions were conducted by Ms. Yakshitha, App Developer at Accenture Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Pune, who led a full-day session on the intricacies of Wikipedia editing. The event also saw the participation of Dr. Vishwanatha Badikana, President of Karavali Wikimedians User Group, Mr. Kishore, Treasurer of Karavali Wikimedians User Group, and faculty members from various institutions.
